La Vaqueria is a family run business situated on the outskirts of Benamargosa, in the Axarquia region of the province of Malaga.
La Vaqueria means, quite literally, "cowshed" and artist and owner Su Derrick has spent the past few years restoring and converting it into a delightful shop and café with a pretty garden and welcoming atmosphere.
Su has her studio here where she gives classes and you may also visit her during all opening hours to chat, seek advice or see her working. Many of her paintings are on display as well as some works by other local artists.
She takes her inspiration from the natural beauty she sees around her and has developed her own unique style of decorative art. She also has a lifelong interest in traditional Romany art and these influences can be seen in her pieces, especially in her "Roses and Castles" traditional style canal ware.
The Shop has a large selection of original hand crafted and painted gifts and accessories ...many of which may be personalised to your taste.
Su has a unique range of jewellery and a selection of home made cards for every occasion.
She also stocks crafting materials for adults and children, many of which are not available elsewhere in Spain and inexpensive Moroccan crafts which she has enjoyed bartering for!
The Cafe at La Vaqueria offers an English Country Kitchen style menu with almost everything made on the premises. Home made cakes, ploughman’s style lunches, filled rolls and sandwiches are always available to visitors and weary travellers!
Enjoy your refreshments in the shaded garden or air conditioned interior in the summer or sit by the wood burning stove during the chilly months.
Drop in any time between 10am - 3pm Tuesday - Saturday as part of a lovely day out around rural Axarquia or come and find that specific gift or accessory that is unique and hand crafted with love!
You will not be dissapointed!
Please note that La Vaqueria is closed for all of January and all of August, thank you.
